When we remove your braces, we will begin the retention stage of your treatment. Your final orthodontic result depends on you wearing your retainers. Remember to remove your retainer before brushing, and brush your retainer before placing it back in your mouth.
Retainer Instructions
Clear Essix Retainers
- For the first 6 months wear your retainer 12-14 hours a day. After 6 months wear for sleeping only.
- After 12 months you can wear your retainer while sleeping or a minimum of once or twice a week to maintain your bite. Wear more often if your retainer becomes tight. If your retainer does not fit, call us immediately so we may make a replacement.
- To clean- gently brush your retainers with soap and water only or Retainer Brite. DO NOT USE TOOTHPASTE; your clear retainers will become scratched and cloudy looking.
Hawley (Acrylic & Wire) Retainers
- For the first 6 months wear your retainer 24 hours a day.
- For the next 6 months wear it at night only. If you forget to wear your retainer and it does not fit, call us immediately so we may make the proper adjustment or replacement.
- After 12 months you can wear your retainer while sleeping or a minimum of once or twice a week to maintain your bite.
- To clean- brush the retainers daily with toothpaste or Retainer Brite. DO NOT USE foaming denture cleanser; these chemicals can damage your retainers.
Bonded Retainers
- Make sure to keep the area around your retainer very clean. Flossing may be difficult but it is very important to floss daily. There is a One-year guarantee on this retainer for breakage.
